Understanding the Limitations
It’s essential to consider the limitations of SFMC account architecture. Unless multi-org is enabled, you can only integrate one SF org with one MC account using the native installed package. However, with multi-org enabled, there is no limit to the number of SF orgs that can be connected to one MC account.
Enabling multi-org also means that the standard preference/subscription center can no longer be used, which may be a consideration for some customers.
Top-Level BU Considerations
Using the top-level BU as an admin-only BU may not be the most efficient approach, especially for non-enterprise accounts, as it may result in underutilization of the top-level BU.
With multi-org enabled, the connection to the CRM production org would be with the top BU anyway, and child BUs cannot be connected to SF orgs independently.
Best Practices
Checklist for Optimizing SFMC Account Architecture
- Use a parent-child hierarchy for business units
- Assign the top-level BU as the main production BU for the main brand
- Use child BUs for sub-brands and/or test/dev environments
- Connect the top-level BU to a production SF org
- Connect child BUs to sandbox SF orgs
- Consider enabling multi-org for flexibility
- Plan for the limitations of multi-org, including the loss of the standard preference/subscription center
What is the recommended approach to SFMC account architecture?
Use a parent-child hierarchy, with the top-level BU as the main production BU.
Can I connect multiple SF orgs to one MC account?
Yes, with multi-org enabled.
What are the limitations of enabling multi-org?
The standard preference/subscription center can no longer be used.
Can child BUs be connected to SF orgs independently?
No, with multi-org enabled, the connection to the CRM production org would be with the top BU.
What is the best approach for non-enterprise accounts?
Use the top-level BU as the main production BU to avoid underutilization.
How do I plan for the limitations of multi-org?
Consider the impact on the standard preference/subscription center and plan accordingly.
