Salesforce Marketing Cloud Next Consulting & Modernization

Implement Marketing Cloud Next without ripping out what already works

Most Marketing Cloud Engagement estates don’t need a full rebuild. The work is deciding which parts do.

Genetrix helps you pick the edition, the architecture and the transition path. Every MCE workload gets classified Retain, Retire, Redesign or Migrate before anything changes.

Why we think this shift matters

Aman Batra, CEO of Genetrix, on what changes with Marketing Cloud Next and where an existing Marketing Cloud Engagement investment fits. About 36 seconds.

As you might know, marketing is entering its foundational shift.

It’s not about just customer messaging through journeys.

It’s about unifying all the data coming from all the touch points and then executing your campaigns.

To empower this change, Salesforce has launched Marketing Cloud Next, which sits on Data Cloud.

Genetrix being into this space for five years and leadership themselves being worked as an architect for a decade now is at the forefront of this change.

I invite you to get in touch with us, and hopefully we can be the early adopter of this new change, this technology and create a lot of value for all of us.

Thank you so much and good day.

Bye.

Already on Marketing Cloud Engagement? Marketing Cloud Next does not mean starting over

Salesforce’s next-gen capabilities can be adopted alongside existing Marketing Cloud investments, through the appropriate “+” edition path.

So the first question is which workloads should change, and why. Not how fast you could replace MCE.

What we look at before proposing anything

Journeys, automations, data extensions, integrations, content, consent, reporting, and the team habits wrapped around all of it.

Keep what works

  • Stable, valuable Engagement journeys stay where they are
  • Marketing Cloud Engagement+ is positioned so you keep the campaigns, data extensions and journeys you already have, and still reach Marketing Cloud Next capabilities
  • Journeys interoperate. Marketing Cloud Next flows can orchestrate your existing Engagement journeys and send members into them
  • Campaigns do not merge. Marketing Cloud Next campaigns are not connected to the classic campaign feature, so classic campaigns keep running in parallel
  • Nothing proven gets rebuilt without a business case
  • Deliverability, consent and reporting continuity are protected throughout

Modernize where value is clear

  • Marketing Cloud Next capabilities on the Salesforce platform: Data 360, Flow Builder, Experience Cloud-based content experiences and Agentforce
  • Redesign whatever is too manual, too custom or too developer-dependent
  • Unify data and segmentation instead of duplicating audience logic
  • Give marketers a content and flow model they can reuse safely

Not sure which side each of your workloads belongs on?

Review my existing MCE architecture

Should you migrate from MCE to Marketing Cloud Next?

It is a workload-by-workload call, and for most estates the honest answer is a mix. “Migrate everything” is rarely the right first decision.

Some of it.
Almost never all of it.

Move a workload when this is true

  • You want next-gen campaign and flow capabilities on the Salesforce platform.
  • Data 360 data and segments need to be usable in marketing.
  • Marketers need governed content they can reuse without raising a ticket.
  • The process needs a redesign, not a faithful copy of its technical debt.
  • Agentforce or AI-assisted marketing genuinely fits a use case here.
  • Sales, service, data and marketing need to line up better than they do.
  • The current MCE build costs more to maintain than it returns.

Leave it in MCE when this is true

  • The journey is stable, valuable and blocking nothing.
  • It leans on an MCE-specific capability with no good target-state design yet.
  • The change would cost more than the near-term value.
  • The business owner is not ready to redesign the process or the data model.
  • Nobody has validated a testing, consent, deliverability or cutover plan.

We treat Marketing Cloud Next adoption as a portfolio decision, not a product swap.

The Genetrix 4R framework

The four decisions to make before moving an MCE workload to Marketing Cloud Next

Not every MCE asset deserves the same destination. Classify each one before you plan effort: journeys, automations, data assets, integrations, content patterns, reporting.

Retain

Keep it where it is when it works.

Best when

  • it is stable and delivering value
  • there is no meaningful capability gap
  • changing it adds risk without adding value
Typical candidates
  • mature MCE journeys
  • proven integrations
  • automations with no reason to change

Retire

Do not pay to migrate technical debt.

Best when

  • it is unused, duplicated, obsolete or unowned
  • a newer business workflow has replaced it
  • it costs more to maintain than it returns
Typical candidates
  • inactive journeys
  • duplicate data extensions and dead templates
  • one-off automations that became permanent by accident

Redesign

Use the transition to create a better operating model.

Best when

  • it works, but it is far too complex
  • the data model needs unifying or simplifying
  • marketers need more self-service
  • Flow Builder, Data 360 or reusable content change what good design looks like
Typical candidates
  • manual campaign orchestration
  • developer-dependent templates
  • personalization logic scattered across too many tools

Migrate

Move or rebuild when the target state is clear and valuable.

Best when

  • capability fit is validated and dependencies are understood
  • testing and cutover are planned
  • the team is trained to run the new design
Typical candidates
  • high-value journeys or campaigns
  • segmentation use cases ready for Data 360 activation
  • content patterns ready for reusable templates

Marketing Cloud Next and Marketing Cloud Engagement are different products with different building blocks. Do not assume every MCE object has a one-to-one native equivalent. That assumption is what turns a modernization into an expensive re-implementation.

Want your own estate classified?

Get a 4R assessment for your MCE estate

Nine phases, from discovery to handover

Three stages, nine phases. Skim the stage that matters to you and open it only if you want the detail.

Every phase ends in a deliverable you review before the next one starts.

Stage 1Assess what you already have

  1. Discover the current estate

Inventory what exists and what depends on what, before anyone estimates effort.

    DeliverableCurrent-state inventory and dependency map

  2. Apply the 4R classification

Every material asset is classified Retain, Retire, Redesign or Migrate, then scored. Scoring is what makes the backlog defensible.

Deliverable4R matrix and prioritized modernization backlog

  3. Select licensing and target architecture

Growth or Advanced, plus the “+” edition path where it applies. Salesforce Enterprise or Unlimited edition and a Data 360 licence are requirements, not options.

    DeliverableTarget architecture and license-fit recommendation

What we actually do in stage 1

01 · What we inventory

  • journeys, campaigns and Automation Studio jobs
  • data extensions
  • APIs, SFTP and external integrations
  • content and templates
  • subscriber and consent model
  • business units
  • IP, domain and deliverability setup
  • reports and what depends on them
  • custom code
  • who owns what

02 · What we score against

  • business value
  • technical complexity
  • feature fit
  • operational pain
  • data readiness
  • compliance risk
  • integration dependency
  • effort and change impact

03 · What we decide

  • Growth vs Advanced
  • the “+” edition path, where it applies
  • Salesforce Enterprise or Unlimited edition (a requirement, not an option)
  • Data 360 licence (a requirement, not an option)
  • channels and add-ons
  • identity, consent and integration architecture
  • business units, environments and testing

We are not the contracting authority. Confirm final licensing and entitlements with your Salesforce account team.

Stage 2Build it so marketers can run it

  1. Establish the data and consent foundation

Connect the org and the data sources. Settle identity and consent before a single message goes out.

DeliverableValidated data, identity and consent foundation

  2. Build a reusable content system

Brands, templates, blocks and naming standards. This is what makes every later campaign cheaper than the one before it.

    DeliverableMarketer-ready content library

  3. Build campaigns and flows

Use Salesforce campaign and marketing flow concepts as intended. Element-for-element rebuilds of MCE journey logic are how these projects go wrong.

DeliverablePilot campaigns and flows ready for end-to-end testing

What we actually do in stage 2

04 · What this can include

  • connect the Salesforce org and the data sources
  • configure the Data 360 components the use cases need
  • map identity and customer data, then define segments
  • map consent and communication preferences
  • set data governance and data-quality controls
  • in eligible coexistence scenarios, synchronize selected data extensions to Data 360 while existing MCE integrations keep using them

05 · What we configure

  • marketing workspaces
  • brands and default brand
  • email and landing page templates
  • reusable content blocks
  • approved personalization patterns
  • locked and editable components
  • asset taxonomy and naming
  • who publishes, who approves

06 · Design principles we apply

  • no element-for-element copies of MCE journey logic
  • use campaign and marketing flow concepts as intended
  • cut avoidable branching and duplicate logic
  • reusable patterns where supported
  • an owner named for each flow
  • reporting instrumented from day one

Stage 3Land it without breaking what runs

  1. Test end-to-end

Test the whole chain, including what it does to the MCE processes you decided to keep.

    DeliverableTest evidence and release sign-off

  2. Release in waves

Big-bang cutovers are rarely warranted. Legacy gets retired after stability and business sign-off, not before.

DeliverableControlled transition, with a rollback or coexistence plan where needed

  3. Enable the team and optimize

Hand over something your team can actually run, then keep improving it against a KPI baseline.

    DeliverableOperational handover and optimization roadmap

What we actually do in stage 3

07 · What the test pass covers

  • data correctness
  • segment membership
  • consent enforcement
  • content and personalization
  • links and tracking
  • forms and landing pages
  • flow logic and failure paths
  • integrations and deliverability
  • analytics
  • user permissions
  • regression on retained MCE processes

08 · Example wave model

  • Wave 1: low-risk, high-learning pilot
  • Wave 2: high-value reusable use cases
  • Wave 3: cross-channel or integration-dependent workloads
  • Later waves: retire legacy, once stability and sign-off are in

09 · What handover includes

  • marketer training
  • admin runbook
  • support model
  • KPI baseline
  • campaign and content governance
  • monthly optimization review
  • technical-debt backlog
  • Agentforce use cases, once foundations are stable

Want this mapped against your estate?

Start with a discovery session

No guaranteed week count. You get a phased estimate after discovery and the 4R assessment, not before.

Which Salesforce Marketing Cloud setup fits your business?

Growth, Advanced or an Engagement+ path. It comes down to your channels, your requirements and what you already own.

A note on the name

Salesforce now brands its marketing line Agentforce Marketing (formerly Salesforce Marketing Cloud). The edition names have not changed: Marketing Cloud Next Growth and Advanced are still what Salesforce sells. Searched under the old umbrella name? You are in the right place.

Need Path Experiment or business units? Advanced. Already on Marketing Cloud Engagement? Look at Engagement+ before anything else.

Prerequisite

Marketing Cloud Next requires Salesforce Enterprise or Unlimited edition, and a Data 360 licence.

Salesforce documents both as requirements, not optional extras, and neither is included in a Marketing Cloud Next edition. If your org sits below Enterprise, that gets resolved before any Marketing Cloud Next conversation.

What that means if you are not there yet

Existing Marketing Cloud Engagement and Account Engagement customers reach these editions through a renewal with an add-on. We would rather tell you this now than three meetings in. Not sure what your org runs? That is the first thing we check.

Tick everything that applies to you

Nothing is submitted and no personal data is collected. The suggestions update as you tick.

Paths worth evaluating

Marketing Cloud Next Growth Suggested

The core edition. Email, forms and form handlers, landing pages, segmentation, marketing flows, Data 360 data streams and AI-assisted campaign creation. No Path Experiment and no business unit support; both of those need Advanced.

Marketing Cloud Next Advanced Suggested

Adds five things Growth does not have. Path Experiment, Mobile App Messaging (flash, in-app and push), AI Engagement Frequency, AI Engagement Scoring and business unit support. Fit follows requirements, not company size.

Engagement+ / hybrid Suggested

Keep MCE, reach MCN. For teams already on Marketing Cloud Engagement who want next-generation capability without replacing what runs today. Available on Pro+, Corporate+ and Enterprise+, through a renewal with an add-on.

Account Engagement+ / hybrid Suggested

Keep the nurture programs that work. For teams already running Account Engagement who want to know whether Marketing Cloud Next adds value on top, rather than in place of it.

Architecture review first Suggested

Three scope changers. Business units, SMS or WhatsApp, and Data 360 segmentation all move scope and commercials. SMS credits are not included with any Marketing Cloud Next edition and must be purchased as an add-on. Do not assume the MCE business-unit model maps one-to-one to Marketing Cloud Next.

This is a decision aid, not a contractual answer. We publish no Salesforce pricing here because packaging changes. Final editions, entitlements and commercial terms have to be confirmed with your Salesforce account team.

Build it once. Let marketers reuse it safely.

Reusable templates, content blocks and marketer self-service. Genetrix builds a component system where technical teams lock the parts that must not change, and marketers edit the parts that should.

If a marketer needs a developer to change a headline, the implementation is wrong.

Technical teams build the guardrails once; marketers launch inside those guardrails repeatedly.

  1. Architect / admin builds guardrailsRoles, workspaces, brand, data sources
  2. Templates, blocks & flow patternsApproved, locked, documented
  3. Marketer edits safe zonesCopy, imagery, CTA, audience
  4. ApprovalDefined reviewer and QA checklist
  5. LaunchOn-brand, governed, measurable

Brand system

Campaigns start on-brand instead of being corrected later.

What it contains

Typography, colors, button styles, tone, and a default brand per workspace.

Email template system

A new campaign email means changing a few approved fields, not rebuilding an email.

What it contains

Locked global styles, headers, footers and legal content. Editable copy, image and CTA zones inside approved layouts.

Landing page template system

Lead-generation pages become repeatable and governed.

What it contains

Approved layouts, reusable sections, brand defaults, controlled dynamic content, forms and SEO fields.

Reusable content blocks

Update once, reuse everywhere.

What it contains

Headers, footers, disclaimers, campaign banners, CTA modules, product blocks, legal text. Audience-specific variants where they earn their keep.

Reusable campaign / flow patterns

Common campaigns stop being rebuilt from zero.

What it contains

Standard starting points, where supported: welcome, lead capture, event follow-up, nurture, re-engagement, renewal reminder, handoff to sales or service.

We do not claim every flow element is reusable the way a content block is. This gets built to current product capabilities.

Governance that is usable, not bureaucratic

Business users move faster without weakening brand, data or compliance controls.

What it contains

Creator, editor and publisher roles. Workspace ownership, approval path, naming and taxonomy standards, editable vs locked components, plus a QA and release checklist.

What Genetrix can implement in Marketing Cloud Next

Six workstreams. Data readiness is the one that decides how well the other five go.

Data & audience

  • Data 360 connection and data-model readiness
  • Audience segmentation
  • Identity and consent considerations
  • Activation of Salesforce and external data

Campaigns & automation

  • Salesforce campaigns
  • Marketing flows in Flow Builder
  • Trigger-based and scheduled automation where supported
  • Routing and handoff to CRM processes

Marketing Cloud Next campaigns run in parallel with classic Marketing Cloud Engagement campaigns rather than merging into them. We draw that ownership boundary explicitly.

Content

  • Email, landing pages and forms
  • Reusable templates and content blocks
  • Dynamic content and personalization
  • Brand system

AI / Agentforce readiness

  • Campaign creation use cases
  • Content and segmentation assistance
  • Governance and human review
  • Use-case prioritization

AI is not a substitute for data quality, consent, architecture or QA.

Analytics & optimization

  • Campaign and content reporting
  • Marketing performance setup
  • KPI design
  • Test and optimization roadmap

Integration

  • Sales Cloud / Service Cloud alignment
  • External data sources
  • MCE coexistence where required
  • API and integration design based on actual requirements

Design Marketing Cloud Next as part of your Salesforce architecture

Not as a standalone campaign tool. Data 360 and Flow Builder in context, as a conceptual reference model: what ends up in your build depends on your edition, add-ons and confirmed requirements.

Marketing Cloud Next, MCE transition and edition questions

Sixteen questions, answered before you have to ask them. Open the ones that apply.

Your question not on the list?

Ask it in a 30-min session

Straight answer, no obligation. We will tell you if you do not need us.

Does Marketing Cloud Next replace Marketing Cloud Engagement?

No, not automatically. Existing Marketing Cloud Engagement customers can reach next-generation capabilities through the relevant Salesforce “+” edition path while still using what they have.

In practice you assess workloads one at a time and decide what to Retain, Retire, Redesign or Migrate.

Do we need to migrate all of our MCE journeys to Marketing Cloud Next?

No. A full rebuild is the wrong default. Stable, valuable journeys can stay in MCE while selected use cases move, where Marketing Cloud Next gives you a clear advantage. Scope follows capability fit, dependencies, data readiness and ROI.

What happens to our MCE data extensions?

They stay where they are, and they can also be synchronized.

Salesforce documents that when you synchronize a data extension, your team keeps using any integrations that rely on data extensions in Marketing Cloud Engagement, while the same data becomes available for campaigns, segments and flows in Marketing Cloud Next.

Salesforce also states there is no additional cost for bringing that data in. Synchronization is available on Marketing Cloud Engagement Pro+, Corporate+ and Enterprise+ editions.

What is Engagement+?

Engagement+ is Salesforce’s path for Marketing Cloud Engagement customers to reach Marketing Cloud Next alongside what they already run.

Salesforce describes it as gaining the next-generation features of Marketing Cloud Next while keeping the campaigns, data extensions and journeys you have built over the years.

It is available on Pro+, Corporate+ and Enterprise+ editions, reached through a renewal with an add-on. Entitlement depends on your contract, so validate licensing before you fix scope.

What do we need to already own before Marketing Cloud Next is even an option?

Two things, and Salesforce documents both as requirements. Marketing Cloud Next requires Salesforce Enterprise or Unlimited edition and a Data 360 licence.

Neither is in the Marketing Cloud Next edition price, and everything runs in Lightning Experience only. If your org sits below Enterprise, fix that first.

Existing Marketing Cloud Engagement and Account Engagement customers get there through a renewal with an add-on.

What is the difference between Marketing Cloud Next Growth and Advanced?

Both cover the core: marketing flows, email, forms and form handlers, landing pages, segmentation, Data 360 data streams and data graphs, Calculated Insights, reporting, consent management and AI-assisted campaign creation.

Advanced adds the Path Experiment flow element, Mobile App Messaging (flash, in-app and push), AI Engagement Frequency, AI Engagement Scoring, and business unit support. Those five are absent from Growth.

The right edition follows from your use cases, not your company size. Use the license-fit section to see which path fits.

How do we know whether to Retain, Retire, Redesign or Migrate an MCE workload?

We score business value, feature fit, dependencies, data readiness, compliance risk, operating pain, effort and change impact. Out comes a prioritized 4R backlog rather than a blanket migration plan.

Does Marketing Cloud Next use Journey Builder?

No. Marketing Cloud Next uses Salesforce Flow Builder and marketing flows. Marketing Cloud Engagement carries on with Journey Builder. If you run both, we design how campaigns, journeys, flows, data and reporting fit together.

Is Data 360 required for Marketing Cloud Next?

Yes. It is a requirement, not a recommendation. Salesforce documents Marketing Cloud Next as requiring Salesforce Enterprise or Unlimited edition and any Data 360 edition.

Data 360 is the layer Marketing Cloud Next runs on, so budget for it upfront. Consumption sizing still needs confirming during planning.

Can non-technical marketers manage campaigns after implementation?

Yes, if the org is designed for it from the start. That means reusable templates, content blocks, brands, editable zones, locked governance elements and a documented campaign process. Marketers then make controlled changes without a developer for every task.

Can we run MCE and Marketing Cloud Next together?

Yes, and it pays to be precise about what actually joins up. Journeys interoperate: Marketing Cloud Next flows can orchestrate your existing Engagement journeys and send flow members into them.

Campaigns do not: Salesforce states that campaigns in Marketing Cloud Next are not connected to the classic campaign feature in Marketing Cloud Engagement, and that classic campaigns keep running without interfering with Marketing Cloud Next campaigns.

So the design has to say which system owns each workload, and how data, consent and reporting work across both.

How long does an MCE-to-MCN transition take?

There is no reliable one-size-fits-all timeline. It depends on estate size, integrations, data quality, channels, custom code, business units, compliance, deliverability and how many workloads you pick to move. You get a phased estimate after discovery and the 4R assessment.

Can Genetrix help choose the right Marketing Cloud license?

Yes. We map your Salesforce footprint and requirements against the relevant options, then tell you which path deserves evaluation. Final commercial terms get confirmed with Salesforce.

Can Genetrix build reusable templates and components?

Yes. That covers brands, email and landing-page templates, content blocks, governed personalization, shared workspaces, permission design and marketer training.

Are SMS and WhatsApp included?

No. Salesforce states plainly that SMS credits are not included with any Marketing Cloud Next edition, though they can be bought as an add-on. Unified Conversations for SMS and WhatsApp sits in the Advanced edition.

Country support, registration, sending setup, consent and per-message economics all need confirming before you commit to a channel.

What should we do first?

Start with a short discovery session. Already on MCE? The first useful deliverable is a current-state inventory and 4R assessment. New to Marketing Cloud Next? Start with use cases, data readiness and edition fit.
